The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large working breed of dog bred for draft work, herding cattle and guarding the farms of Swiss farmers. The breed is believed to have originated in the Alps 2000 years ago when Roman soldiers marching to the north left behind the mastiff ancestor that has since been developed into such breeds as the Rottweiler, Saint Bernard and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is the largest of the four types of Sennenhunde, or Alpine Herding Dog. The other varieties being the Bernese, the Appenzeller and the Entlebucher. These dogs share a similarity of coat color and markings. They are black coated with white on the face, chest, and feet, and rust markings above the eyes, on the muzzle and on the legs between the white and the black.  To see a side-by-side comparison picture, visit this German sennenhunde site.

The Swiss Mountain dog has become a popular companion animal because of it’s outstanding temperament. They are gentle, loyal dogs, who will guard your home but are not aggressive.
